Marines

The following is a transcription of an interactive Marines recruitment video.

"Times change, people think about things in new ways... and yet the marines are strangely unyielding in their ways. The marines tend not to rely heavily on the techno-gadgetry of mercs, and their like. We've got balls, and we've got weapons. Don't be fooled though, anything to give a marine the tactical advantage in battle is always explored.

You're sitting reading through your history book, of battles fought by legendary soldiers, like Destroyer, Charak, Boggle. Soldiers who fought with the raw courage of the marines. Captain Pechenski hobbles into the room, a rye grin on his grizzled face. "Nice to see you keeping up with your studies, trooper," he says, his voice is strong, despite his age. You salute the captain quickly, as he sits his aged body down beside you. "I remember the good days, trooper.", he says, "I remember when all that was needed was courage, a gun, and a little contempt for life..." The Captain gets a strange faraway look in his eyes, "Yep, trooper. Things change, people change. I remember the glorious hyve battles against the xenomorphs, I remember the raging carnage we faced, and still we triumphed."

The Captain is silent for a while, locked in some ponderous bemusement. He turns slowly round to face you again. "You know trooper", he says "You're gonna see a lot of bad things out there - rape, torture, massacres, but you gotta be strong, ya know. The marines are like an impenetrable wall. Each unit is a brick, and each brick holds the rest up, son..." You hold this thought in your mind, since joining you'd felt special, part of a whole. It had felt like you were almost part of one whole, unstoppable being.

The Captain speaks again, "Yeah, you can't just depend on your gun, alone, now, heh, it's more complex...' The Captain grins evilly at you, "Now we got the grunts, the neos, they reckon those guys can take any amount of punishment you can throw at them. Then there's those damn recon. Fear them, and fear them well, trooper. They could put a hole in you from a thousand yards - and you'd never know they were there." The Captain looks briefly away, and sighs.

"Then we got them psionicicist wannabes, the Crimson Dragons. These guys are dangerous... I once saw a group of 6 of them wipe out a whole hyve." The Captain sighs. "Yeah, they're badass, and a little unstable - but they're still marines, although I can't say I quite trust 'em." The Captain slowly stands up, his aged body creaking beneath him. You stand and salute him, and he turns around to face you and says one final thing: "Watch out for your brother marine, 'cause he sure as Hell's watching out for you..."
